"Best" is a loaded term, since your favorite code editor is very much a personal preference things. I have no idea how old that article is though, I can't find it now.Īt that point the ISE will really start to develop and it will release some of the technical limitations that 3rd party console developers have faced.Īt present ISE can be extended with things like ISESteroids but I have never used that. So it was basically 'watch this space' for a new PowerShell application which was more like the way the ISE works. There was this one MS article where they were saying the console host (conhost.exe - the actual console that applications like PowerShell and cmd use) has been lacking functionality but they can only go so far with it for a number of technical reasons, backward compatibility etc. I've watched a lot of PowerShell training & discussion videos and I got the impression that things were moving toward the ISE rather than away from it. It might be lacking some features but I don't think it's going anywhere.
